FDA warns against using online pharmacies

Seniors try to take good care of their health, but unfortunately sometimes they can be lead astray and put in more danger.

According to the Associated Press, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is warning consumers about using internet pharmacies as a part of their BeSafeRX campaign. Some people may choose to use these outlets as a way to save some money, but the FDA reports that it could be fake drugs that are contaminated, leading to bigger issues.

"Our goal is to increase awareness," FDA Commissioner Dr. Margaret Hamburg told The Associated Press, "not to scare people away from online pharmacies. We want them to use appropriate pharmacies."

It's important that anyone providing home health care to seniors warns them against using online pharmacies, as they could cause more problems to one's health. Counterfeit medication is only one of the issues seniors face. According to ABC News, some seniors are at risk for being over medicated if the patient has multiple doctors.

In this case, the physicians may not check with one another and may prescribe medications that do not go together.
