You may already know that Medicare covers 100% of eligible home health services like skilled nursing care, physical therapy, speech therapy, occupational therapy, occasional home health aide visits and more. But do you know if you or your loved one qualify for this care? Here are some specific conditions that must be met in order to be eligible.
To begin receiving home care, your doctor must order the services and establish a plan of care to be reviewed regularly with the home care agency. Usually, a home health care agency will assist in coordinating the services your doctor orders for you. In order to qualify for Medicare coverage, services must be delivered by a Medicare-certified home health agency.
In addition, your doctor must certify that you are homebound. This means your doctor recommends you stay home due to your condition or your condition significantly impacts your ability to leave home without special help or requires considerable effort to do so. Being homebound does not mean that you are completely unable to leave your house. In fact, Medicare allows for infrequent absences for non-medical reasons, like attending a religious service.
The amount of services you need will also help define if you are eligible. Additionally, you should know that Medicare does not pay for 24-hour care at home, meals delivered to your home, homemaking, or personal care services.
